Award Nomination Criteria
The nomination period for the Pro Bono Mahatma Award will be open from January 30 to August 31, 2024.
Nominees for the Pro Bono Mahatma Awards must meet the criteria established by the Standing Committee of Mahatma Award. The Committee is currently accepting nominations in the following two categories:
-
Individuals: Attorneys who do not derive their income from providing legal services to individuals of limited means are eligible. (Compensated pro bono coordinators are not eligible.)
-
Organizations: Small and large law firms, government attorney offices, corporate law departments, law schools, and other legal institutions whose members have collectively made exceptional contributions in accordance with one or more criteria are eligible.
The Committee encourages nominations from diverse backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, age, ability, family status, and socioeconomic status, to recognize achievements from a wide range of perspectives. The Committee also encourages the nomination of newer attorneys to highlight their accomplishments and inspire others to engage in pro bono work.
International pro bono efforts are eligible for nomination, although priority is given to domestic pro bono work by the Committee. Up to five awardees will be selected based on outstanding performance aligned with the nomination application requirements.
