MEANING OF 'MAHATMA'
Mahatma is an adaptation of the Sanskrit word mah
ātman, which literally meant "great-souled." As a general, uncapitalized English noun, "mahatma" can refer to any great person; in India, it is used as a title of love and respect.

WHEN CAPITALIZED
When capitalized, however, it usually refers to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the great leader, who's life is a story of heroic effort to establish the values of Truth and Non-violence in human life. In pursuing this objective Gandhi became a Mahatma.

If your organization is making sustainability and environmental progress while keeping social responsibility a core part of its operations with the goal of making a lasting impact on the health of the planet and it's people, we encourage you to send in your entries for Mahatma Award.
